The Italian national railway holding, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, finalised a deal to acquire 40 new locomotives with Siemens. The new iron horses will be deployed by TX Logistik, FS’ subsidiary for international rail freight services, along the Rhine-Alpine Corridor.

The investment for this initiative is 300 million euros, with delivery expected in September 2024. The agreement between Siemens and TX Logistik, signed at the transport logistics exhibition in Munich, also includes an option for an additional order of 25 more locomotives. This project is part of the group’s maxi plan to rejuvenate its fleet with 400 new locomotives and 3,600 wagons. Once this plan is completed, the average age of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) fleet will go from 30 to 7 years.

The new locomotives, which will be built at the Siemens’ factory in Munich-Allach, will provide TX Logistik with 30 per cent additional capacity, as FS pointed out. This is expected to benefit Italian exports along the Rhine-Alpine Corridor towards Central and Northern Europe. Moreover, they will also consume 25 per cent less energy than their current counterparts. Moreover, TX Logistik is expected to receive 115 new T3000 wagons by the end of the summer as well.

FS’ plan for a younger fleet

The renewal of the group’s fleet was included in the Industrial Plan published by FS exactly one year ago. The largest beneficiary of the new rolling stock will be Mercitalia Rail, the rail freight subsidiary of FS. Mercitalia will, in fact, secure 300 new locomotives and 2,860 new railcars over the next decade. The plan for TX Logistik is to receive 80 new locomotives, with half of them included in this deal. Moreover, the FS international subsidiary is also will also receive 115 T3000 wagons before the end of the summer, which will be manufactured by Tatrawagonka.
