Cargo Sous Terrain (CST), a Swiss project to implement an underground freight-dedicated rail network is now entering a new phase. The Swiss Federal Offices of Transport and Territorial Development opened the audition period, during which the parties involved can submit their views on the project.

Starting from 1 February, the Swiss cantons under which CST’s first section will run have the chance to express their opinions about the project. The first section of Cargo Sous Terrain would be between Härkingen and Zürich. The four cantons are Bern, Solothurn, Aargau and Zürich. The cantons will also be in charge of organising the auditions with their towns and the public, which will start on 1 March and will carry on until mid-March.

Cargo Sous Terrain

The project was launched in 2013 but things seem to have turned during the summer of 2022, when the Swiss Federal Council approved a law on underground goods transportation. CST aims to create an underground rail network for the transport of single wagons carrying two EUR pallets at 30 km/h. The network would be connected to various logistics hubs whose locations will be decided by the cantons. One year ago, the first drilling tests to study the subsoil between Härkingen and Zürich. CST claims that operations could start in 2031.
