Big Red goes green – DB Cargo UK successfully trials vegetable oil fuel

Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil may be something of a mouthful, but it could be on the lips of every carbon-aware freight manager in the country, thanks to testing by DB Cargo UK. The operator has just completed successful trials of the new ‘HVO’ fuel as part of a bid to decarbonise its operations. One of the company’s 3,200bhp (2390KW) locomotives has been running on the plant-based fuel in confidential tests, and passed with flying colours. They haven’t called it Sunflower ’67 just yet.
