Nestlé raises the roof to get intermodal bulk foods on track

The foods producer Nestlé UK and Ireland has delivered a first of its kind rail container which facilitates double-stacked pallets. A new design overcomes an incompatibility between the manufacturer’s product pallets, which are optimised for road transport, and the less generous dimensions of the standard shipping container. The intermodal standard is the maximum that can be handled across the bulk of the UK rail network. A cunning development allows Nestlé to load the full capacity of a standard container, without reconfiguring its warehouse operations. For a multi-national operating in global quantities, that’s a big commercial advantage.
