Bigger trains, bigger loads, and bigger weather. The legacy of Britain’s railway system is a persistent challenge for Network Rail, the infrastructure agency in the UK. Maintaining and upgrading the Victorian-era rail network to meet present-day demands is a constant battle against time, budget constraints, and the evolving needs of the modern rail network. Increasingly, however, the issue is the relentless battle against the weather, as climate change takes its toll on the ageing network.
