CargoBeamer wants to build a terminal near German-Czech border

CargoBeamer, a German company specialised in the rail transport of non-cranable semi-trailers recently signed a Letter of Intent to launch the construction of a new terminal in Saxony, the German region bordering with Czechia. It needs to be mentioned that this project is still in its early stages, but there are various reasons behind it, as a spokesperson from the company told RailFreight.com.

First, there are no large-scale intermodal terminals for the transport of semi-trailers in the area, thus there is a gap that CargoBeamer could fill. “Saxony is a small state but it is a very important production site in Germany”, the CargoBeamer spokesperson underlined.

Moreover, there is a significant road freight traffic coming from Poland and Czechia which, with a new terminal, could be shifted to the railways once it enters Germany. The third and final reason is that CargoBeamer has its headquarters in Saxony’s largest city, Leipzig, but has no facilities in the area. So far, most of the company’s network focusses on Italy, France and western Germany, with no concrete connection to the east of the country.

Still in the early stages

“We have been planning to build a terminal near the Germany-Czechia border for a while now”, the CargoBeamer spokesperson pointed out. Currently, the company is looking at various sites that could be suitable for becoming the location of the new terminal. The most recent development was a Letter of Intent signed by CargoBeamer with various Saxonian partners. They are LISt (a subsidiary of the Saxon Ministry of Economics, Labor, and Transport), Rail.S, a rail technology cluster, Saxony Trade & Invest Corp. and Bauer Spedition & Logistik, a regional freight forwarder.
