Finnish logistics company Nurminen Logistics will open a new rail route connecting northern Finland to the port of Gothenburg. The service will commence in April. According to the company, the new route helps Finland’s international accessibility at a time when routes through Russia are unavailable.

The new rail route will run from Haparanda, a town on the border between Sweden and Finland in the northernmost region of Scandinavia, to the port of Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast. According to the company, the rail link will strengthen the vitality of western Finland’s coastal region as well as northern businesses. Freight can be transported in both containers and trailers on the new route.

Nurminen Logistics points out that until now, freight from northern Finland has had to travel hundreds of kilometres via road to the port of Helsinki. But even from there, ships only offer feeder connections to Europe. The new rail link to Gothenburg offers direct access to ocean routes that provide connections to Europe’s main ports, the USA and the Far East.

Therefore, the new rail route will benefit Finland’s accessibility in difficult geopolitical times, according to a company representative. “Due to the current geopolitical situation, Finland’s international accessibility has deteriorated significantly and well-functioning logistics solutions and services are now even more important for Finland’s competitiveness, success in export markets and security of supply,” says the representative.

As now Finland and Sweden, both are members of NATO – and for goal of EU…, Swedish railway system further, decisively, has to be upgraded – and then, thereby “Skandiahamnen” further will offload the big ocean harbours of European continent, etc., etc.
(Currently Swedish railway tracks, regrettably, devastatingly, are short of as well resiliency and redundancy, thus in no respect equal with top modern supply chains – simply due for a shift, to STAX32,etc., to a sustainable, a New Old Railway.)
