CargoUnit may purchase up to 100 locomotives from Siemens
The Polish locomotive leasing company CargoUnit may purchase up to one hundred Vectron MS and Smartron locomotives from Siemens Mobility. The two parties signed a framework agreement to that end. Thirty Vectrons and ten Smartrons have been ordered by CargoUnit, whereas the delivery of an additional sixty Vectrons remains on the table.
The first deliveries of the locomotives are planned for 2025. According to CargoUnit, the Vectrons and Smartrons are multi-system locomotives that can carry out a wide range of freight tasks in Europe. In particular, the company states that the Vectron locomotives are suitable for use in many countries and contexts by virtue of their modular design.
For now, CargoUnit has ordered 30 Vectron and 10 Smartron locomotives. The signed framework agreement also includes the option to expand the order with 60 additional vehicles. The leasing company will have 66 Vectrons and 18 Smartrons in its fleet upon delivery, and could potentially expand its fleet to nearly 150 vehicles from Siemens Mobility.
According to CargoUnit, its new Vectron MS locomotives are intended for use in Central and Eastern Europe, the Netherlands and Belgium. It will feature a Baseline 3 ECTS system. On the other hand, the Smartron locomotive is intended for use in Germany, Romania and Bulgaria.
Modernising rolling stock
Siemens Mobility and CargoUnit stress that the deal enhances sustainable transport. ‘We expect to continue the trend of replacing rolling stock with modern rolling stock in the coming years, which is perfectly in line with the implementation of sustainable development plans of both CargoUnit and rail carriers looking for reliable low-emission rolling stock,’ says the CEO of CargoUnit Lukasz Boron.
