Lithuania and Poland seek regular rail freight route to Ukraine

Lithuania and Poland have expressed their wish for a regular rail freight route to Ukraine. The respective ministers of transport met in Warsaw on Monday to discuss the issue. Such a new route would help establish a reliable corridor for the export of Ukrainian grain through Baltic ports.

According to Lithuanian minister of transport Marius Skuodis, cooperation between Poland and Lithuania to plan new logistics routes with Ukraine is a critical issue. Skuodis stressed that such cooperation is necessary to improve connectivity between Central Europe and the Baltics. The success of regular trains in the countries could encourage investments and modernisation of railways.

Moreover, Skuodis emphasized that the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) provides an opportunity to develop a rail corridor between the Baltic states and Ukraine. The new TEN-T network already provides for a corridor link to Ukraine via the Dorohusk-Yagodin border crossing. TEN-T also includes a railway to the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda, which could then be used to provide a reliable export route for Ukrainian grain.
