Rijeka line closed until 22 December, freight trains divert through Slovenia
The railway line between Zagreb and Rijeka in Croatia will remain closed until 22 December for restoration works. The closure follows the collision of a freight train and a track maintenance vehicle on the line’s Meja-Škrljevo section on Monday, 11 December. The accident caused substantial track and rail infrastructure damage that disrupts traffic to and from the port of Rijeka. Freight trains must use a diversion route via Slovenia until works are complete and deal with increased costs.

For reducing risks, by nature, now imposed at “optimal maintenance”, etc., simply safety factors, (redundancy) surplus capacity, safely has to be provided for, at infrastructure of railways! (Current mantra, is suboptimal…)
A future proof, a robust, a low risk railway, simply a New Old Railway is requested!
Neither resilient, nor redundant, current standard, at TEN-T, etc., regrettably is not sustainable, but devastating!
(All other modes upgrade! Now, STAX32, should be min., etc.)
