Ely benefits from HS2 cancellation, but project still a decade away
The cancellation of the HS2 project between Birmingham and Manchester has resulted in the reassignment of funds initially allocated for Britain’s high-speed rail project. Instead, the prime minister Rishi Sunak has pledged a raft of transport improvements around Britain. Among them, the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement programme, spearheaded by Network Rail, has significant implications for rail freight traffic – not least for traffic at Felixstowe, Britain’s busiest intermodal port and rail freight terminal. Assuming, of course, the pledge is upheld.
