When it comes to safety on the UK network the public continue to be their own worst enemy. Two incidents in the Nottinghamshire area of England highlighted the issue during August. The month also saw an awareness campaign by the national infrastructure manager Network Rail, drawing attention to the dangers of abusing level crossings, where road traffic, including pedestrians, traverse the railway at grade. In one incident two people were seriously injured, including a public-spirited police officer who was attempting a rescue.
