Adif, the Spanish infrastructure manager, will invest 18,3 million euros to upgrade the railway line between Ronda and the country’s largest port: Algeciras. The project will be carried out by a consortium that will involve French tech company Thales, which has been quite active in rail investments in Spanish ports.

As Adif underlined, this line is mostly used for freight operations. The funds will be used to upgrade the signalling facilities on the 105-kilometre railway between the two Andalusian cities. The main actions will be the implementation of an Automatic Train Protection system, fixed communications, LED light signalling, and an update of the energy system. The project is going to be financed by the European Regional Development Fund, as Adif mentioned.

Thales and Spanish ports

Thales is collaborating on this upgrade with Sistemas y Montajes Industriales, a company specialised in rail infrastructure projects. In April, The French company won the tender for the development of new functionalities for the security installations of the railway terminals at the port of Huelva. Moreover, in 2021 it developed a new concept for the operation and automation of rail maneuvers inside the port of Sevilla.

Adif’s rail plan for the port of Algeciras

The Spanish IM is investing significant resources into upgrading the railway connections to the port of Algeciras. The port is one of the end destinations of the Rolling Highway, planned to link Algeciras with Zaragoza, crossing the country from north to south. The Rolling Highway would also cross, and therefore connect, both the Mediterranean and Atlantic TEN-T corridors. More projects in the port’s area have been or are being carried out on the Algeciras-Bobadilla and the Ronda-Bobadilla lines.
