Two new rail freight services connecting Italy and Austria have been launched by ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG). The service, as the company claimed, provides end-to-end logistics solutions, including first and last-mile deliveries.

For both initiatives, the destination in Austria is Villach, near the Austrian borders with Italy and Slovenia. One of them will run between Villach and Treviso, not too far from Venice, whereas the second one will connect with Frosinone, south of Rome. The Villach-Treviso service will have one roundtrip per week, while the Villach-Frosinone one “will be operated on request”, as RCG added.

When it comes to Italy, Villach is an important destination for the port of Trieste as well. In November 2022, RCG launched a connection between the Italian port and Villach to speed up customs operations. This service is expected to help to decongest the port of Trieste by moving containers directly from ship to rail and having customs operations carried out in Austria. Moreover, in February, RCG collaborated with the port of Trieste by launching two direct services from the port of Trieste to Linz and Vienna. Both these services run twice a week.
