The Implementing Act to implement Electronic Freight Transport Information (eFTI) in the European Union (EU) was officially adopted on 19 December 2023. This regulation is the first step for EU Member States to develop the proper IT systems and procedures to replace paper documents with electronic ones.

The act of the eFTI Regulation on common procedures and rules for accessing and processing eFTI data by competent authorities was drafted by the eFTI4EU project. After a year of discussion, the regulation was approved by the EU’s Digital Transport and Trade Facilitation Committee. A full implementation of eFTI practices is expected by the end of 2026, eFTI4EU mentioned.

Things seem to have accelerated in recent months when it comes to paperless freight transport throughout the Union. The European Commission drafted the eFTI proposal laying out the specific guidelines for all the players involved on 24 October. Moreover, the eFTI4EU project received over 28 million euros in funds to create a prototypical solution for the functioning of the eFTI platform.
