New intermodal service Luxembourg-Port of Kiel

LKW WALTER, Stena Line, Port of Kiel and CFL multimodal jointly announced the launch of a new rail connection between the Intermodal Terminal Bettembourg-Dudelange and the Terminal Schwedenkai in the Port of Kiel. The new intermodal connection was initiated at the Intermodal terminal of Bettembourg-Dudelange today, 21 January.

The new service will be running with 3 roundtrips per week for cranable trailers and containers. The partners are convinced that this regular intermodal service will boost the development of global European intermodal solutions. It connects the Luxembourg area to the Port of Kiel, which offers regular ferry lines to Göteborg.

Shift to rail

The Luxembourg area already offers a wide network of train connections to European destinations, such as Lyon, Le Boulou and Barcelona. Luxembourg aims to grow as a European hub, providing an alternative to nearby nodes as Duisburg and Vienna.

The new train connection also allows for the transfer from road to rail of up to 10.000 trucks and CO2 savings of about 11.000t per year. It thereby contributes to the shift to rail, a much sought after ambition by freight operators in the European Union.
