New multimodal service from Duisburg to Greece via Venice
Austrian-based operator Rail Cargo Group, Italian shipping company Grimaldi and Dutch logistics provider Samskip will launch a multimodal service between Greece and the German logistics hub of Duisburg. The route will include the Duisburg-Venice rail freight link and the ro-ro connections from Venice to the Greek ports of Igoumenitsa, Patras and Corfu.
The launch of a new logistics solution is scheduled for 18 March. Rail Cargo will provide three weekly trains between Duisburg and the port of Venice. Grimaldi will carry lorries and Samskip containers to Greece on its ro-ro ships. The shipping company will use two ro-ro vessels with a capacity of 250 trailers per each and two ro-pax vessels. In 2020, Grimaldi plans to increase the volumes by entering into service two ro-ro ships with a capacity of 515 trailers per each.
Shift to rail
The Duisburg-Venice trains will consist of 19 wagons. They will have 550 metres long and an average weight of 1,400 tonnes. The travel time will take around 32 hours, crossing the town of Tarvisio on the Italian-Austrian border. Rail Cargo Group and Grimaldi estimate that the new route will remove around 5,000 lorries from roads yearly. In addition, the multimodal service between Duisburg and Greece will boost the freight traffic of the ro-ro terminal in the Venice port.
