Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) started in-house production of many rail components and saved over 2,4 million euros compared to using external parties. Among the products that are now being developed at Ukrzaliznytsia’s facilities, there are containers, new types of sleepers, barriers, brake shoes, and brake tires.

The money saved concerns the 2022-2023 biennium, as the company pointed out. In total, 151 products were involved in this initiative, for an investment of nearly 19,3 million euros. Of these, 15,6 million have already been invested, with 104 products being already under production.

The reduction in cost thanks to this project is quite significant for some of these products. The in-house production of brake pads is 30 per cent cheaper for Ukrainian Railways, while for rectifiers for VL80 electric freight locomotives, the costs are halved. Of course, cost efficiency is not the only reason why Ukrzaliznytsia launched this initiative. As the company pointed out, many products are no longer available due to the current geopolitical situation.
