Sun setting for Scottish oil refinery, but rail freight may see a new dawn
Scotland’s Ineos Grangemouth Oil Refinery, a key player in the nation’s energy landscape, is set to cease operations by 2025, raising concerns about the potential impact on rail freight traffic and the regional economy. Regular rail freight petroleum flows to Prestwick, on the west coast of Scotland, and Dalston, in Cumbria, North West England. This traffic, and occasional trains to Rolls Royce at Sinfin, near Derby in England, is also under threat. However, the site is expected to transition into an import facility for refined products, potentially necessitating continued rail forwarding.
