China opens railway loop around largest desert

Today, China opened a railway loop around its largest desert, the Taklimakan, in the country’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The railway line is 2,712-km long and allows for speeds up to 120 km per hour. It has 22 stations, of which six are offering cargo services. It is the first time a railway line enables trains to skirt a full circle around a desert, according to the China State Railway Group (China Railway).
