The Ukrainian postal company Ukrposhta has been testing a rail service to deliver imported international mail. It is the first time this solution has been adopted since 2002, as the company mentioned, stating the decision came to bypass the many blockaded road border crossings.

Ukrposhta is cooperating with the National Post of Estonia Omniva, Ukrainian Railways and Slovakian company Interport. Three wagons filled with about 80,000 parcels from global markets were delivered to Ukraine. “ Compared to roadways, when delivered by rail, parcels cross the border in one day”, Ukrposhta said.

Finding alternative transport solutions is currently a necessity to avoid the blockades at many road border crossings between Ukraine and Poland which started in early November. At the beginning of December, Ukrainian Railways introduced a new service connecting Sknyliv and Slawkow, in Poland, suitable for semi-trailers via the Izov-Hrubeshiv border crossing.
