These 5 European destinations were added to the New Silk Road in 2020

Five new European destinations have been added to the New Silk Road since the beginning of this year, according to operator UTLC ERA. This includes the German cities of Burghausen, Ludwigshafen and Sassnitz, the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and the Polish city Gliwice.

In China, the city of Shilong was added to the network. This is located in Guangdong Province iin the southeast of China and traditionally a sea shipping destination. “This once again demonstrates the systematic transition of some cargo from the sea to rail” UTLC ERA commented.

Record volumes

Although the start of the year was marked by a market disruption due to the coronacrisis, the volumes on the New Silk Road are now picking up again. The month of April even witnessed an historic record in terms of volumes.

UTLA ERA, which represents a market share of 80 Per cent on the broad gauge section of the New Silk Road, carried 41,2 thousand TEUs in April alone. This is a doubling of volumes compared to the same period last year. Considering the large market share of the company, this is an indicator of the positive trend on the entire corridor, the company points out.
