EU and China to analyse sustainable rail transport corridors
The EU and China will conduct a joint study on sustainable rail-based comprehensive transport corridors between Europe and China. This was agreed during a meeting of the EU-China Connectivity Platform on 8 April in Brussels.
The study will assess the current situation of railway corridors between China and Europe and analyse problems on this corridor, in terms of hard and soft connectivity. The study will propose the most sustainable corridors and, as a result, related key projects. All relevant countries will be consulted during the implementation of the study.
Plans
By the end of April, the two sides will identify the missing links and bottlenecks. The study should point out how capacity of the hubs can be improved and the quality of transport services can be upgraded.
The study will form the basis for further agreements under the EU-China Connectivity Platform, which promotes synergies between TEN-T and One Belt, One Road initiative. It is expected that concrete plans will be formed and signed by the end of this year.
