Largest Iberian rail freight terminal is one step closer to reality

The Lousado terminal, in northwestern Portugal, is expected to be ready before the end of the year and progress has been made recently. The Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council has acquired 3,904 square metres of land destined for the offices and reception areas of the companies working at the terminal.

The project also includes the creation of new routes to grant access to the terminal to the industrial area in Lousado as well as a connection to the national road network. The total investment from the municipality amounts to 122,000 euros for three lots of land in three of the city’s parishes of Lousado, Esmeriz, and Cabeçudos.

The Lousado terminal

With an area of ​​220 thousand square meters, the Lousado terminal, located near the port of Leixoes, has been labeled as the largest rail freight terminal in the Iberian Peninsula. MEDWAY, one of the largest rail freight operators in the Peninsula and part of MSC, is responsible for the construction of the terminal, with a total investment of 63 million euros.

The terminal will be equipped with four 750-metre railway lines and a total capacity of 11 thousand TEUs. The facilities will support the storing of reefer containers, provide a designated space reserved for dangerous goods, and will also have warehousing and logistical services buildings.

The Lousado terminal project has been in the making since 2018. Its construction timeframe foresaw that it would be ready for operations in 2022. However, the beginning of construction kept being delayed until having the green light only in January 2022. The terminal is expected to
