MSC establishes Medway Belgium to expand rail freight in northern Europe
Shipping giant MSC has started a recruitment campaign for a new railway company in Belgium under the name Medway. In Portugal, Spain and Italy, MSC has been operating its own trains under the Medway label for some time.
MSC looks towards northern Europe with plans of rail expansion. In this way, the company wants to offer even better all-in-one solutions for customers and optimise its supply chain. Medway has already requested an extension of its field of action from the European rail agency ERA for Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, reports Belgian website Flows. In the initial phase, the company will transport containers from Belgium to Germany, partly via the Netherlands.
Gradual steps
The start-up of the rail activities for Medway Belgium will take place in different phases. In a first phase, Medway will take over the MSC shuttles between Antwerp MPET and the German hinterland destinations Neuss, Frankfurt, Germersheim and Wörth. In a second phase, the portfolio will be expanded with other existing flows and new projects via MSC’s network.
Antwerp headquarters
The headquarters of Medway Belgium will be located in Antwerp. According to the company, this is a logical move as Antwerp will always play a central role in the MSC context since it is one of the company’s hubs in northern Europe.
