Eurodistrict PAMINA is investigating the feasibility of reopening the cross-border railway line between Rastatt in Germany and Haguenau in France. Although the railway line is envisaged for passenger services, the German authority is looking into the benefits for rail freight, which would be served with a diversion route connecting the countries. The line is currently not in use for most of its part.

The line between Roeschwoog in Germany up till Haguenau is currently disused and would have to be rebuilt. This is a 21.8 kilometre railway line, passing the cities of Soufflenheim, Schirrhein, Oberhoffen and Kaltenhause. The sections from Rastatt to Wintersdorf and Roppenheim to Roeschwoog are still operative. The bridge crossing the Rhine is in use for road transport and would have to be rebuilt for train traffic.

Important European project

“The project is still in its initial stage. We will first carry out a feasibility study with the help of INTERREG funds”, commented Eurodistrict PAMINA. INTERREG is a European institution that helps regional and local governments to develop and deliver better policy. The line is considered to be an important connection in Europe. DG MOVE, the EU Commission’s department for Mobility and Transport pointed out: “Indeed, such connections are at the heart of the European project.” The feasibility study is expected to be completed within the next two years.
