JSC Russian Railways (RZHD) will purchase 5 thousand locomotives until 2025. This strategic plan was announced by Oleg Valinskiy, deputy CEO of Russian Railways, at the International Transport and Logistics Forum PRO//Movement.1520 last week.

This year RZHD intends to spend 1 billion Euros in the acquisition of 600 locomotives. Most of them will be used for freight operations, consisting of 300 electric freight locomotives and circa 100 diesel units. The other 200 are shunting and passenger locomotives.

Long-term plan

During the next few years Russian Railways will add around 700 locomotives annually. For example, the company plans to buy 731 locomotives in 2019, and 746 locomotives in 2020.
“Annual demand for renewing of locomotives in the period until 2025 is between 720 and 745,” – noted Oleg Valinskiy.

Moreover, the strategic plan of RZHD is not limited to purchases. The railway company intends to continue the modernisation of its current rolling stock. “In line with the Long-term Development Plan until 2025, we plan to repair 15 thousand locomotives,” added Oleg Valinskiy.

RZHD fleet

The RZHD’s current fleet counts 11.8 thousand diesel and electric freight locomotives, 196.3 thousand freight railcars, 5.9 thousand shunting locomotives as well as 3.1 thousand passenger locomotives, 21 thousand passenger railcars and 14.3 suburban trains. The operation length of Russian Railways network is 85.5 thousand kilometre, of which 43.7 kilometre is electrified.
