After a successful pilot phase, web portal Railfreightlocations.eu will be expanded to include all rail freight facilities in Europe. The web portal is an online source of information on rail service facilities across the continent, supported by the European Union. It currently includes more than 3,700 locations throughout Europe.

HaCon, a software provider for public transportation, mobility and logistics, will soon start further developing the web portal. “The EU Commission has decided to transform the portal into a Europe-wide standard instrument for information on rail service facilities, appointing HaCon Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH and its partners to conduct this project”, the company explained. The International Rail Freight Business Association (IBS), the International Union for Combined Road-Rail Transport (UIRR), the International Union of Railways (UIC), the German Promotion Centre for Intermodal Transport (SGKV) and the Swedish consulting and software company Triona are project partners.

Available since 2015

The portal has been available online as a pilot version since October 2015. So far, the portal includes intermodal terminals, rail logistics centres, as well as public and private sidings. The scope for the further development of the portal will be extended to include all kinds of rail service facilities such as marshalling yards, maintenance facilities and fuelling stations.

“Railfreightlocations.eu shall offer all service facility operators a comfortable and low-cost opportunity to comply with the obligation to publish and update information about their facilities in accordance with the relevant EU regulations, as well as to publish further information about their facilities and the services they offer”, HaCon noted. “Shippers, rail operators and further rail logistics companies will get a single source of information for all market-relevant facility data and services.”

In addition to the technical development of the portal and the initial data collection, recommendations for a business and governance model will also be developed for a future permanent use of the portal. The project will take approximately one year and aims to be completed in May 2019.
