Manzanillo tunnel in Mexico to be completed

Manzanillo rail freight tunnel in Mexico will opened in June this year. The 105.2 million Euros project is essential in strengthening the rail freight connectivity of the Port of Manzanillo with the Mexican Pacific coast.

The tunnel has a 500-metre length and 8.5-metre altitude to enable double-stack wagons. It is a key logistics infrastructural project, linking Manzanillo to the Port of Veracruz on the Caribbean coast, bypassing the Panama Canal for the transport of Chinese imports to the rest of the country or to export products from the states of Colima or Jalisco to the EU or the US.

In addition, it will move loads from trucks to trains, reducing road traffic in Manzanillo, one the most important Mexican touristic areas. The Port of Manzanillo in the state of Colima is the most important ports on the Mexican Pacific coast, having handled 2.5 million TEUs and 29 million tonnes in 2017, according to its authority.

Celaya railway

At the same time, rail freight companies Ferromex and KSCM are completing a new railway track and rail freight station close to the city of Celaya, in the state of Guanajuato. This railway track has a 46 kilometre length and it will  serve several manufacturing plants of groceries, automotive and pharmaceutical companies (Honda, Johnson&Johnson, Cie Automotive, Coca-Cola, Pepsico, Galletera Gamesa, etc.), which supply to Mexico DF and the states of Jalisco and Guanajuato.
