China Railway Tunnel Group, a subsidiary of state-owned China Railway Group Limited, has proposed to build the HH-tunnel connecting Helsingborg in Sweden and Helsingør in Denmark. The tunnel is a second rail and road link crossing the strait between the northern countries, needed to alleviate traffic on the Øresund Bridge.

Construction of the HH-tunnel has been discussed several times but until now, a building plan has not materialised. Representatives of China Railway Group Limited, one of world’s biggest railway construction companies, visited Helsingborg last year to study existing materials related to the project and is now preparing a proposal, according to News Øresund.

Funding options

Authorities in Sweden and Denmark say a tunnel is needed to support traffic flows over the Øresund Bridge, according to the Swedish news agency TT. The HH-tunnel would provide an alternative without disrupting shipping. The two countries plan to jointly apply for an EU fund for a feasibility study, while other funding options will be discussed this spring, according to TT.
