Improvement works on the railway connection between the Spanish city of Teruel and the Port of Sagunto have been completed, according to the ministry of Development. Teruel lies in the region of Aragon and the Port of Sagunto near Valencia. The line also connects Valencia and Castellon.

The project was carried out at a budget of 7.3 million Euros. During the work, rail freight trains between Aragon and Valencia were diverted to the railway network of the Catalan province of Tarragona, adding 300 kilometer to the rail freight journey.

New project

Now that work on this line is completed, the Spanish government will commence the initial studies of a rail freight connection between Teruel and the railway crossing the northern coastal Spanish regions (Basque country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia). This new connection, budgeted at 335 million Euros, will connect the Mediterranean Railway Corridor with the Atlantic Corridor.
